A gentle reminder!!

Discount entry tickets for the Knitting and Stitching show Harrogate don’t miss your opportunity!

Hello everyone hope this finds you well and raring to go again now the sewing season is upon us. It’s time to start thinking of making your special winter coat. Maybe using beautiful cashmere with an easy chic pattern is just so classic. Or maybe it’s a new slinky Christmas outfit you’re thinking of – and of course learning new skills along the way
Lots has been happening since the last newsletter, a real variety of classes with satisfying results for everyone. Below you will see, ‘just some’ of the great things ladies have been creating recently.

My Pink Chanel style jacket

At long last, the ‘pink Chanel style jacket is complete’ – well nearly, I think I ought to add pockets onto this now.

Overlocking class sept

Oowww those overlockers can be tricky to use, but once you get to grips with them they produce such beautifull finishes to your garments, and not only that, you’d be surprised at just what other things they can do for your dressmaking.
Happy ladies now with tight neat necklines using stretch knit fabric.
Aaahh – that’s how you do it!!

Sheilas wedding coat 2   Sheilas wedding coat 1

Sheila used a Vogue vintage pattern to produce this beautiful Mother of the Groom wedding outfit – using a very pale green vintage look fabric, bought at Fine Fabrics in Harrogate

2 Janets in their perfet fit dresses
Also above, we have Janet & Janet, both ladies had struggled for many years being disappointed with things they had made because of a bad fit. At the end of the ‘fit to flatter dress’ class they couldn’t believe just how well their toiles fitted and of course, when these are made up in good quality fabric they will be even better!

Janet's suede jacket                                  Linda's sued jacket

Two good pals and experienced sewers, Linda and Janet from the North East. They have been to many of the classes, but wanting to stretch their knowledge and skills, stepping out of their comfort zone using more specialist fabrics. These quick easy jackets were made from suede- and what a finish! they got just what they wanted in the colour they wanted and loved every minute of making them using the special techniques needed for working with such materials.

Lisa's toile masterclass           Lisa's Masterclass in fitting toile

Lisa in her basic starter toile – How did we get this perfect fabbie fit? This was constructed on the masterclass on fitting. On this class we look in great detail at the fit of skirts, bodices, and sleeves, analysing ‘your’ figure to a fine degree making comparisons against commercial patterns.
Lisa now has the all important ‘knowledge’ on how to get the perfect fit for her figure, regardless of which pattern she uses. She now knows why, patterns don’t fit, where to make the amendments for her, and how to do this – easy when you know how!!

Couture summer sewing

Well, I can’t let this news update go without of course mentioning the Royal wedding of Harry and Megan – I had an overlocking class that day but we all agreed to have an extended lunch and stayed over later in the afternoon – no one wanted to miss the 1st sighting of the ‘dress’. It was a little too plain for me, thought it could have had some subtle embellishment of pearls and crystals to enhance the bodice – but hey, everyone to their own! and she did look beautiful.

royal wedding dresscelebs wedding outfitsThen what did you think of the above line up of celebs in all their fine glory – not everyone’s choice of style I know, but great to see what they were wearing and no doubt paid astronomical amounts of money for such creations. None of these, or the wedding dress, were anything that we couldn’t make ourselves with professional guidance and advice. Not only looking fab in your choice of outfit, but just loving every moment of every stitch to create it, so come and join one of the classes and let me show you all the special techniques tips and trick to make you look and feel wonderful in your summer outfits.

claire bridal lace top
After running a couture bridal gown course earlier in the year, I’ve now put in an additional course over the next few weeks – so far, on day 1 we discussed in great details just what looks good for each individual, made pattern amendments and constructed bodice toiles to ensure the perfect fit for each. – see above Claire’s perfect fitted bodice. Using a pretty silk Dupion foundation we worked on the initial stages of sculpturing the embroidered lace overlay – so lovely to do!!

Clair's Bridal bodice back view
So whether it’s making your own wedding gown, perhaps wanting to develop your own bridal business or making an outfit for an important occasion. Think about learning to make your own in exactly the style and colour you want, supported by professional guidance and specialist fitting knowledge to make you, or anyone else, look and feel wonderful !!

Trouser pattern drafting 13.6.Just some more shots of a recent trouser pattern drafting class, all these lovely ladies going home very happy after the experience of the day and of course a wonderful fit pattern for each, all tested first by the toile fit.

lorraine Heppenstall draw winnwe 2017

Above we have the lovely Lindsay Heppenstall, the lucky winner from the free draw at the Knitting and Stitching show last November. Lindsey chose to come along to one of the ‘Fit to flatter dress’ classes in May.
She just couldn’t believe it when her name was pulled out of the draw and was so excited about coming along to the class. Lindsey felt she had learned an awful lot on the day and thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other ladies in the class and now rekindling her love of sewing again.

Just to let you know that the Knitting and Stitching show will be here again very soon, taking place on Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th November at the Conference centre in Harrogate.

Details of all classes and a calendar of dates can be found on my website below.

Happy summer sewing and catch up again soon.

Warmest wishes to you all
Gillian

New Spring outfits to make you look good and feel proud you made it all yourself

Well here it is at last – some warm sunshine, how long have we waited for this? Lets just hope it’s a sign of things to come – we’ll see!!
It doesn’t matter really what the weather is like, most of us carry on sewing regardless. This is something I just love to do – sewing outside, get under that parasol and off you go – a perfect day – sun, sewing, and satisfying! The feel good factor !
Talking of feeling good – Did you know that there is some science behind why we love to sew? The British Psychological Society has carried out some research on how clothes make us feel. It’s obvious that most of us are well aware of the power of clothing to affect how other people perceive us, but what about the power of our clothes to affect our own thoughts? It’s called ‘enclothed cognition’ – How what we wear affects how we think – oooowwww
‘’Clothes can have profound and systematic psychological and behavioural consequences for their wearers,” the researchers say.
Well, that really does happen doesn’t it. When we’re lucky enough to be able to make our own clothes and busy sewing, it gives us happy thoughts and makes us feel really good when we wear something we’ve made, and especially when we receive complements on our skills.
So, if you want to improve your enclothed cognition, come and step up your skills to another level and further develop your knowledge as a seamstress, making beautiful clothes that make you look and feel wonderful.
I’m sure one of the many classes on offer will help you succeed whatever your sewing projects might be.
To help you do this, here’s just some of the classes that’s coming up soon:
• Couture bridal gowns – Tuesday 15th May
• Sewing and fitting with knits – Wednesday 16th May
• Know your overlocker – Saturday 19th May
• Fit to flatter trouser pattern drafting – Wednesday 13th June
• Start at the very beginning – Saturday 16th June
For full details of all classes see the calendar by clicking here.

Alfresco sewing for me, I just love this – let’s hope it continues!!

Due to popular demand another overlocking class has been added this month – a must to help you overcome your fears of using these, they’re great – when you know how – see above

Dare I say, a full back view of my derriere, aahh!! but just to show you that if I can get a good fit on trousers for my rear, anybody can achieve the same with making your own trouser pattern.

Show news

Well, here we are nearly at the end of January already, I can’t believe it, but this just means that Spring is just around the corner – Hurray!!!
Hope everyone had a lovey break over Christmas and New Year and eager to get back to normal and do lots of sewing.
Seems a while ago now, but it was such a pleasure to meet so many new people at the last Knitting and Stitching Show, also catching up again with the lovely ladies who have attended previous workshops – all wearing beautiful garments they had made, looking very smart and feeling very proud of their achievements!!

At the show I always have a lucky draw for a free day’s tuition. The lucky winner this time was a lady called, Lindsey Heppenstall. Lindsey was delighted and couldn’t believe it, and has chosen to come along for her free day, to the ever popular ‘Fit to flatter dress’ class.

Thought you might like to see some pics from our fun time at the show.

Lovely ladies who’ve made lots of things with the Yorkshire school of sewing

My valued helper Anne

We just love being here!!

Linda trying out a little Chanel style jacket- looking forward to making her own

Even the men have fun here – chatting up the ladies

Happy to help, but June just having a quick sit down – hard work standing all day for 4 days!

More happy customers back again – having fun at the show

So, what’s new for 2018?
Apart from my popular general listed classes, I have been asked to put together a class working with leather.
Something very different, and easier than you think.
Using soft clothing leather, and ideally a very simple style skirt pattern to begin with, together with the techniques I will show you, you will gain lots of skills and knowledge to make something quite different for your wardrobe. Just to give you and idea of what you can do, see below – gloves and the skirt to a suit I’ve made in the past – I just loved making these.
Of course, if you prefer, you can use faux leather instead.
I have added this class onto the ‘Help at hand day’ on Thursday 15th March. If this is something you would like to learn – expanding your dressmaking skills, just let me know and I will send you all the necessary details.

It doesn’t matter what sewing level you are, there is something for everyone.
Small friendly classes, a day packed full of information and quality teaching for you to improve all your fitting and dressmaking. All details of current workshops, and a calendar of dates for 2018 can be found on the website below. If dates don’t always fit for you, just let me know as at times I am able to make some changes.

l Iook forward to teaching you all the wonders of beautiful dressmaking and achieving a perfect fit!

Warmest wishes Gillian x

The Yorkshire school of sewing

A very warm welcome to you all

Just want to say how lovely it was to meet so many new people at the Knitting and Stitching Show this year, also catching up again with ladies who have attend previous workshops – and all looking ‘pretty smart’ and ‘proud’ to be wearing their  lovely garments they have been making, specially the Vintage styles.

It seems the show was a great success again, and so exciting to see lots of wonderful things to inspire we creative people!  I’m sure you all went home with many bags of fabric, haberdashery and even new sewing machines/overlockers,  all raring to go to  produce a lovely new outfit. (classes available for you to get full use out of these machines – see the website) I was, as usual tempted, and bought some wonderful Prada fine wool. Ooowwww so smart, just need some inspiration as to what to do with and some time to make it up..

This, like previous years, so many people came along, and good to see an increasing numbers of younger girls attending, it’s amazing just how much interest there is in sewing again, it becomes more and more popular each year. I think more people are realising that being able to make your own clothes, not only means, you can have what ‘you’ want, but is really satisfying and feeling proud – you made it!!

So, if you need to start at the beginning, or you are a ’returner’ to sewing, like lots of people, and just want to brush up on your skills to gain more confidence or a more experienced sewer, but would like something more challenging, then I can help. It doesn’t matter what level you are, there is something for everyone. Small friendly groups and a day packed full of information for you to improve your skills.  All details of current workshops, for 2017 can be found on the website below – Calendar of dates attached above. If dates don’t always fit for you just let me know, at times I’m able to make some changes.

Every year I make something that I hope will inspire ladies (and some men too) to come along and get sewing again – this year using my lovely bright pink blouse and spotty little skirt adds a touch of glamour. Not everyone’s taste I know, but I like a little bit of bling to brighten us up. However, believe it or not, yet again,  that ‘little green jacket’ proved to generate so much interest. Whilst the Chanel style jacket is wonderful to make, the green jacket  is a garment that most people could create without having lots of sewing experience.  If this is something you would like to do, you will see I have put additional dates in for Thursday 19th January – Sunday 29th January – Wednesday 8th February – and Saturday 4th March in both Leeds and Harrogate.  So come and make it yourself. Just bring 1.5mtrs of boiled wool or similar type – I will provide the pattern and the knowhow for you to achieve this yourself.

All details of current workshops, and a calendar of dates for 2017 can be found on the website below – If dates don’t always fit for you just let me know, at times I’m able to make some changes.

At the show the Gift Vouchers also proved to be very popular – still not too late though, if you would  like to buy them for someone, or to get someone to buy them for you as a  worthwhile Christmas present, just let me know, and I will send them out to you immediately. Available in denominations of £10, £20, £30 & £40.

Finally, I am happy to announce that the Free Prize Draw was won by Lorraine Stephenson, just waiting for Lorraine to confirm back. Then she can come along and be introduced to the wonderful world of sewing. Sorry to everyone else, but I hope you will still come along to learn the skills and gain the knowledge needed to  create beautiful garments.

If you would really like to improve your fitting/sewing skills before Christmas,  there is just one last place available on the ‘Fit to flatter trousers pattern drafting’  Wednesday 14th December, in Roundhay North Leeds – just in time  for a perfect pair of super fitting trouser for Christmas –  let me know if you do.

Anyone looking for a ‘sewing machine for Christmas’ I do have a stock  of the Singer brilliance 6180  which is a very good machine and a very reasonable price. The ‘Singer’ has been tried and tested for many many years and always reliable –  these are all brand new boxed and only £155. If you would like one, please just let me know.

So I would now just like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very happy and successful 2017, when we can get together to share our interest. Why not make it your New Year’s Resolution to learn more about making lovely smart outfits for yourself, getting the fit right, and looking great in them!!!

Classes held at Fine Fabrics in Harrogate and Roundhay Leeds

Happy sewing!

Warmest wishes

November  2016 newsletter

Hello everyone, hope this finds you well and looking forward to Christmas!!

I’m sure you have all enjoyed the ‘not too bad weather’ we’ve had this summer and now getting back into what you love to do, like sewing!!!

Thinking of Christmas, if you would like to receive, or maybe give a gift voucher as a present please just email me and I will send these to you straight away.

Are you are thinking of getting a new sewing machine for Christmas as a present, and need some tuition to become confident using it, then just look at my calendar for New Year dates.

Or maybe you would like a new overlocker. Overlockers, have become a must for lots and lots of people this year – these are great aids to your sewing but are feared by many. Like everything, once you are shown and have the ‘knowledge’ you very quickly become very confident and go home raring to overlock everything in sight. Even making a quick easy top, completely using the overlocker is started in the class.

Continued Learning

Just a quick update of what’s been happening in the last couple of months. More and more interested people coming along for the ‘start at the beginning’  realising just how wonderful it is to be able to sew, then progressing onto other classes to develop their skills further.

‘Sewing essentials for a professional finish’ is a really good class for those of you who are returners to sewing, after many years of concentrating on family and work, and now have more free time, or just simply want to achieve a beautiful professional finish to your work.

Fitting

A new Master class on fitting has been added to the collection of classes with a variety of dates for December and the New Year.

On this class we look very closely and refine the fit of commercial patterns to each individual – yes, even if you have a plus size figure, you will go home with the full knowledge on just ‘how’ to get it right for you in future. Concentration on all styles of the bodice, neck, bust, armholes, skirts and sleeves taking home a full set of well fitted  patterns.

Other fitting workshops are also available:

‘Perfect fit to flatter dress’ ladies always go home very pleased with the results of having a dress that fit them properly – always a good class to help with difficulties on fitting.

This also applies to the ‘prefect fit to flatter trouser pattern drafting’ class – large bottoms, flat bottoms, bigger tummies, long legs short legs – not a problem. With trousers just give up buying a commercial pattern they are all difficult to get a good fit – just make your own, again, you won’t be disappointed.

Then of course the ‘little black dress’ number, everyone loves to make that special little something for themselves, on this class we get your dress to ‘fit perfectly’ and incorporate all the special couture finishes – enjoying every minute of creating a lovely dress.

Hope some of these are of interest to you, and of course a whole variety of other classes are available that I’m sure you will find help you achieve a beautiful finish to your garments.

For full details of all classes and a calendar of dates are available above. If some of the dates don’t suit, just let me know and I’m sure we can work something out for you.

All classes take place in either Roundhay Leeds and at Fine Fabrics in Harrogate

Any question please just let me know.

Enjoy  your sewing!

Welcome

Hello, and welcome to ‘The Yorkshire School of Sewing’. Hopefully, on this website there is something to interest everyone who loves to sew; from beginners, those wishing to return to sewing, through to the more experienced seamstresses amongst you who want to further develop your skills and knowledge and learn all the secrets of couture fashion. From a very early age, I too have always loved sewing with a passion! I have a needle and thread in my hand at every opportunity. This goes right back to the days of the swinging 60’s, making my first Mary Quant mini dress! With this passion, I went onto study fashion and design, and then on to support this with a teaching qualification. I first started teaching general dressmaking, and then developed onto teaching City and Guilds Fashion and Design, some 25 years ago. Dressmaking has become increasingly popular in recent years with both the young and the not so young ladies wanting to learn the skills of this wonderful craft, either just as a hobby, or to develop a career in Fashion and Design. It’s such a satisfying feeling when you wear one of your own creations and receive great comments from others on how fabulous you look, and how clever you are to have made it! There is a definite need for a Professional Sewing School here in the Northern region, so, from this, I created ‘The Yorkshire School of Sewing’. Classes are carried out both in Roundhay, North Leeds and at Fine Fabrics in Harrogate. At Fine Fabrics you will find there is a good selection of quality fabrics which are sensibly priced. Should anyone want to learn something that is not included in the workshops/courses – no problem! Just let me know and I will endeavour to include your requirements in future workshops. On the Contact Us page you will find my contact information, a booking form and enquiries page. There is also a calendar of dates when the classes will be running. I look forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully meeting you in the near future when we can share our interest and enthusiasm. Happy sewing!! Gillian
